On Saturday, May 21, 2011 Arusha was a total different city as the Popular broadcaster MIKE CARLSON called all the action from the Sheik Amri Abeid Memorial Stadium in Arusha when Tanzania hosted the first game of college American Football played on the African continent.
The historic and unique game between Drake University from Iowa and the CONADEIP All Stars from Mexico was broadcasted live across the African continent and beamed to countries around the world by ITV (Independent Television Ltd), the largest private TV network in Tanzania. The game kicked off at 1pm local time (US ET +7 hours) on Saturday, May 21, 2011.
This game was actually preceded by two days youth clinic at the Friedkin Conservation (TGT) on May 19 and 20th where about five hundred kids participated including TFFT kiddos. Training was run by players from both teams and officially closed by the Chairperson of the Tanzania Sports Council, Mr. Iddi Kipingu. These kids were thrilled since most of them have never heard of American Football before. Mind you, when you mention football to an African kid particularly Tanzanian the first and only picture to cross in someones mind including myself will be soccer.
On the actual American football game each kid received a free ball to for further training, since then TFFT kids have been bragging to have been in the US simply because of this experience.
